Friends Complete Half Marathon to Support the Cerebral Palsy Trust
David Lofthouse and Alex Long met at primary school and have remained close friends ever since. When David was six years old, he underwent Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery to reduce the muscle tightness caused by his Cerebral Palsy. Following the procedure, David’s development improved significantly, allowing him to embrace life with enthusiasm, something he would never have imagined before the surgery.
David said, “Being given the opportunity to undergo SDR surgery when I was younger truly transformed my life. Unfortunately, the high cost of the procedure makes it inaccessible for many children. This was my inspiration to establish the Cerebral Palsy Trust, alongside friends. Fundraising is essential to help change lives and bring hope to families facing similar challenges.”
The CPT plays a critical role in providing children with access to SDR surgery, a groundbreaking procedure that dramatically improves the quality of life for those with Cerebral Palsy. In partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital, the CPT helps make these life changing surgeries a reality. Beyond surgeries, the CPT also runs community outreach programs that unite and empower the Cerebral Palsy community, offering vital resources and a platform for families to connect.
Alex recently joined the Sherborne family business and is training to become a Sales & Design Consultant. After completing a half marathon in 2024, Alex vowed to take part again, but this time, with David by his side. With a background as a Personal Trainer, Alex worked closely with David, providing physiotherapy, and helping him maintain strength and independence. Together, they set their sights on the Fleet Half Marathon, determined to cross the finish line side by side whilst raising funds for the CPT.
On March 16, 2025, Alex pushed David in his wheelchair as he ran the race, navigating the humps and bumps of the Fleet roads. It was a physical challenge that symbolised their deep bond and their shared commitment to supporting a cause that means so much to them. David said, “The race day challenge was tough, but the support from the crowd and knowing that we were raising both awareness and funds for such an important cause made it all feel more achievable.”
They set a fundraising target of £3,000 through ‘Just Giving’ and thanks to the generosity of Sherborne customers, friends, and family they not only hit their target, but they also exceeded it.
When they reached £4,000, they received incredible news from a family friend, who decided to double their total to £8,000. The total continues to grow, and as of now, they have raised £8,185 for the CPT, a milestone that fills them with immense pride.
Alex said. “My parents and uncles have put in over 30 years of hard work to build Sherborne, and I am proud to be part of the next generation. Many of the Sherborne team have dedicated 25 years to Sherborne and we are all focused on keeping the same values alive, deliver the same trusted service, and make sure Sherborne keeps thriving for years to come.”
