Orangery Inspiration! A Dive into the Latest Designs for 2024
In 2024, it’s very much in fashion to look back and blend traditional styles with modern practicality.
One great way that more and more people are achieving this is by incorporating orangeries into their homes.
Orangeries perfectly blend classic architecture with contemporary functionality, providing not just an aesthetically pleasing addition to your home reminiscent of years gone by, but also a functional and versatile space that can improve your everyday life.
Our blog will explore what orangeries are, whilst taking a look at a few trendy orangery designs for 2024.
What is an Orangery?
Orangeries, sometimes known as ‘garden rooms,’ were first built in the 17th century, as a space to grow citrus fruits on fruit trees. They’ve come a long way since then, and now they’re a happy middle ground between conservatories and extensions, typically characterised by a brick base, walls, large windows, and a flat roof with a central glazed lantern.
The image below will hopefully give you a visual idea.
What’s the difference between Orangeries and Conservatories?
The main difference between orangeries and conservatories is the structure of how they’re built.
Orangeries are typically built with bricks as well as glass, and a solid, lower roof than conservatories.

What materials can be used for an Orangery?
Whilst bricks and double-glazed windows are a given when it comes to installing an orangery, there are several options available regarding the framing material you use.
Timber
Traditionally, timber has been the go-to option for orangeries, and it remains a popular choice today.
However, despite its authentic appearance, it does require regular maintenance to protect it from the elements, which has led to the rise of more durable options.
uPVC
One of these popular modern alternatives is uPVC. A cost-effective option, it is lightweight, low maintenance, available in a variety of colours, and has surged in popularity as a result of these perks.
Aluminium
A relatively new option for orangeries, aluminium has become an increasingly selected option largely due to being lightweight, durable, and requiring minimal maintenance.
It can also be powder-coated in a variety of colours to match your desired aesthetic.
Colours
With several materials now available in an endless range of colours, at Sherborne Windows we make it possible to create a host of unique looks, no matter the existing feel of your property – as well as being able to match the orangery brickwork to that of your property.
In 2024, we’re seeing a real rise in classic colours, such as black, grey, and darker greens for the brick base of orangeries. These timeless options offer great versatility, allowing natural light and greenery to take centre stage of your new space.
In recent times, homeowners have typically experimented more with the colour of the materials on the frame, rather than the bricks. Popular options include pastels such as blue and green, as well as the classic colours mentioned above.

Roof Lanterns – With a Modern Twist
Glass roofs, or roof lanterns, have been a defining characteristic of orangeries since their inception.
However in recent times, they have been adapted to fit modern demands. Natural light is very much in fashion, with current fully glazed roof lanterns designed to enhance the sun’s ability to flood into a room.
They’ve also become more functional, incorporating features such as opening vents, rain sensors, and a range of colours to pick from.
Traditional Orangeries
If you live in a more traditional house/cottage but are worried that an orangery could stick out like a sore thumb, then a traditional option could be the right one for you.
Traditional orangeries are perfect for adding character to a home, with their throwback design typified by using brick pillars and styled window frames.
This doesn’t mean that the orangery’s interior has to remain traditional looking though, as they boast the ability to act as a kitchen, additional living area, games room, or whatever you desire.
Contemporary Orangeries
Although if giving your property a splash of the present appeals more, then a contemporary orangery may be the right move for you.
Our contemporary orangeries maximise glass to enhance natural light, whilst typically combining with bi-fold doors to let the outside world in.
Both the contemporary and traditional options are incredibly energy-efficient and are usable all year round, with their excellent heat retention making them comfortable even in the colder months.
